Uprooted at age nine, Wafaa leaves her Egyptian village—and the protective care of her grandfather Alì—for Piedmont. Overnight, she is thrust into a hostile world of prejudice, forced to learn a new language, and subjected to the tyranny of a strict, unloving father.
Her lifesaver comes by chance during a middle school gym class, sparking a passion that will soon become her ultimate escape: climbing.
